Why We Do What We Do: World Day for Health and Safety at Work 2025

Monday 28 April marks World Day for Health and Safety at Work 2025 – a day dedicated to raising awareness of the prevention of occupational accidents and ill health, and to promoting safe and healthy working environments as a fundamental right.

While this important date highlights the need to prioritise wellbeing, at THSP, it reflects the work we do every day.

As a Health & Safety, HR & Employment Law and Training consultancy, we believe that health, safety, and wellbeing should be at the heart of every workplace all year round.

To mark this year’s World Day for Health and Safety at Work, we asked our team a simple but powerful question: “Why do you do what you do?”

Here’s what they had to say:

“Why We Do What We Do” – THSP Team Reflections:

“During my time at THSP, I’ve built strong client relationships, and I take pride in supporting them as they create a positive and effective health and safety culture in their workplaces. I love connecting with people and being part of their journey toward safer, more supportive environments. I’m also incredibly lucky to be supported by the inspiring leaders at THSP who empower me to do my best work every day.”
Jo Holt, Account Executive

“Whilst serving in the Royal Engineers, safety was a key focus. It was during my medical discharge from the army that I realised that the injuries people sustain really do have life or career-changing impacts. Working in health and safety was a clear path for me, so I could continue to take part in preventing accidents and help educate people in how they can ensure they are always working safely.”
David Large, Health and Safety Consultant

“One of the most rewarding parts of my role is building strong, trust-based relationships with my customers. I get a real buzz from connecting with people, understanding their needs, and working together to create safer, healthier working environments. Providing a high level of service is something I take great pride in.”
Emma Duff, Account Executive

“I like to work in partnership with individuals and businesses to inspire and encourage a positive and responsible attitude to health and safety.”
Adrian Merrell, Health and Safety Consultant

“I have a love for numbers and analytical thinking. It’s not just about crunching the numbers, it’s about helping THSP and colleagues to make informed decisions, optimise their financial performance and contribute to their overall success.”
Jennie Dingle, Finance Director

“I believe with the right information and guidance, leaders can make the best decisions around safety. As a Health and Safety Consultant, I can offer advice and guidance that can make a real difference – after all, safety is no accident!”
Mickey Draper, Health and Safety Consultant

“The variety is endless in HR. There are never two conversations the same, and every day is a school day in some way. We have the chance to shape good practice, equality and fairness, so when our advice and views are taken on board, we know something positive has happened for our customer and its people.”
Andrew Wilson, HR Director

“Having worked in Health and Safety for many years, I know the importance of getting it right. I hope to build a safety culture and ensure that everyone gets home to their families at the end of their working day.”
Dejan Byrne, Health and Safety Consultant

“I’m passionate about helping people, supporting wellbeing, and driving continuous improvement. Working at THSP gives me the opportunity to do just that, every single day. As a proud Mental Health First Aider, I believe that health and safety is about more than checklists – it’s about creating cultures where people feel safe, supported, and able to thrive. I love seeing positive change take root in the organisations we work with. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you’ve helped someone feel like a weight has been lifted from their shoulders!”
Kirsty Maynard, Commercial Director

“To make a difference, particularly through my specialism of CDM, I get great satisfaction as a CDM Advisor to influence the design process. This is an area often overlooked – it is better to eliminate the risk through design evaluation rather than try to manage it during construction and/or building use.”
Derek Fisher, Health and Safety Consultant Manager

“I enjoy being part of a team where everyone’s role contributes to making workplaces safer. It’s rewarding to know that my work helps keep the wheels turning for a company with such a meaningful mission.”
Magdalena Hartley, Accounts Administrator
