Why create a good work space?
Comfortable working spaces can benefit everyone and can help reduce the risk of temporary problem becoming a permanent disability.
Creating and sustaining safe and healthy workstations for all staff members can help reduce sickness absence, improve retention rates and increase productivity.
Alterations can be achieved at a small fee to the employer. Changes to office furniture, provision of adapted mouse or keyboards, changes to working patterns are all reasonable adjustments. Adjustments can only be achieved by working with the individual to identify their needs.
Hot-desking can be a major problem for disabled employees who may need to have their own workstations to suit their needs.
Workstation issues that cause problems
Non adjustable chairs are unsuitable. Positions of monitors and keyboards are important and users knowing how to use the equipment will, over time, result in a better work station.
The main causes of physical symptoms are:
Excessive stretches and reaches;
static postures,
improperly adjusted furniture and equipment,
poorly organised or inappropriate workstation layout,
twisted posture,
excessive stretches and reaches
For employees with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, poor workstations can be detrimental to productivity and performance.
