The HSE recently released a report regarding the impact of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. The report has estimated that there has been a significant fall in the levels of exposure between the years of 1980 and 2015, which will lead to 25,700 fewer deaths from mesothelioma and lung cancer throughout the 100 years between 2001 and 2100.
By preventing 25,700 fewer deaths, at the moment, the value of the benefit from the regulations to society is a staggering £20.9 billion which is continuing to rise. In fact, bearing in mind the time lag, it is estimated that between the period of 2016-2115 this figure will rise to £28.8 billion!
The report highlights the positive impact and influence of workplace asbestos control regulations. Overall, it shows how it has not only met its objectives but also helped to achieve a high level of compliance.
It is extremely important to be aware of asbestos and to be able to understand how to identify asbestos. Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations states that all persons likely to disturb asbestos during their normal work, or who supervise those employees must have the correct level of information, instruction and training so that they can work safely.
