Let’s help to change minds, let’s work together to change lives!
THSP Risk Management are very proud to be supporting The Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) with a new programme that will be launched this year. The programme is called “Mates in Mind” which is about providing training to all workers, to remove the stigma of weakness long associated with mental health issues and to spot the signs when they or a colleague may need help.
Mental health is something that we care very strongly about at THSP. You only need to spend some time researching the statistics of mental health to realise that it is extremely common and unfortunately it isn’t easy to notice because it comes in many different forms. The most common are stress, anxiety, and depression.
Did you know?
- 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year
- Every year in the UK 70 million workdays are lost due to mental illness
- 4 in 5 suicides are by men (78%)
- Nearly three in four people fear the reactions of friends when they talk about their mental health problems
We cannot accept these statistics, by raising awareness and all working together we can make a huge difference. A mental health problem can feel just as bad, or worse, as any other physical illness – only you cannot see it.
“Mates in Mind” highlights the importance of workers looking out for each other. We can ensure that employees are safe by providing the correct PPE, and carry out risk assessments so that practices are safe, this is all well and good, but we mustn’t forget about one of the most important areas of our employees’ safety and that is their mental health, their well-being.
This programme will raise awareness and understanding of mental health in the Construction Industry. Mates in Mind are working with several charities who will provide the professional help. It will help to improve and promote positive mental health across the construction industry in the UK.
Together we can achieve great things! #matesinmind
