Have you ever heard of the saying “Happy employees equals happy customers”? Looking after your employees is possibly the most important thing you can do for your company. Here are some ways that can help you to create a happier working environment:
- Individual needs – Every member of staff is different in their own way and have different preferences. Whilst it would be impossible to create a workplace that meets everyone’s needs; it is important to value your employees’ opinions on the workplace environment and listen to their ideas of improvements.
- Natural light – Scientifically, this can really have a positive effect on mental well-being. Being stuck in an office all day under fluorescent lights during daylight hours and with very little natural light will make employees feel more tired throughout the day. Studies show that natural light exposure in the workplace improves sleep and vitality. Open the blinds and let the light shine!
- Quiet areas – Workplaces can be busy and loud and this can cause a lack of concentration and therefore low productivity. Designated quite areas will really help to clear minds. You could have a quiet area that staff use for detailed tasks that require high levels of concentration or for creative work where you can have some time to think for yourself without having lots of noise around you to distract your thoughts.
- Encourage healthy eating – Any organisation, no matter what size, can take simple actions to promote healthy eating. Whether this be by running information sessions or workshops for employees on healthy eating, nutrition, and cookery; putting up posters; ensuring that there is appropriate food storage for packed lunches and a fridge to keep food fresh.
Research suggests that we work more effectively, collaboratively, and creatively when we’re happy at work. Small changes can have a big difference!
