Brighton Magistrates’ court has fined a contractor £26,667 excluding additional costs of £3,659 following on from an untrained operator becoming injured when a six-tonne dumper truck fell on him, trapping him under the vehicle and leaving him with fractures to his hip socket, right thigh and vertebrae.
The incident occurred when the operator of the dumper truck came round the corner of a barn in order to tip its load, but when the operator reversed his vehicle in order to gain traction, his vehicle tipped over the edge of the embankment. The operator tried to jump clear but became trapped under the vehicle.
A Health and Safety Executive investigation found that the firm had failed to provide the operator with appropriate training for operating a dumper truck. Further research into the investigation also showed that the site manager had not been provided with appropriate training to manage a site safely and ensure that those working under him were doing so in a safe manner.
This incident highlights the importance of training for everyone working on site, from managers down to operators. THSP Risk Management offers up to date CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS). This course is highly beneficial to site managers, agents and personnel who are or will be responsible for planning, organising and monitoring staff and their workforce.
Correct training and understanding is important to ensure that work sites are run correctly, and can lead to avoiding ever increasing fines for breach of standards.
