An investigation is being carried out to identify why a giant bookshelf fell over at a Waterstones store. The giant bookshelf which housed gifts, stationery and cards fell over at the Waterstones Cheltenham store. It fell over just before the store opened and luckily there were no injuries.
Waterstones central press office said, “A bookcase in our Cheltenham shop fell over before opening hours this morning and, thankfully, nobody was hurt.”
“We are, of course, looking into the reasons for this and the incident has been reported to our Health and Safety team.”
While health and safety in shops is essential, the risks in the activities, premises, staff and customers have often been considered as low. However, our experience of retail activities suggest that any busy location, combined with constant interfaces between customers, staff and contractors, can impose high risk issues.
On this occasion the bookshelf fell when the shop was closed meaning that there were no injuries however this could have been a different story.
