Regulation 6 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH) requires an employer to formally assess all operations and/or processes which are liable to cause exposure to hazardous substances.
Performing a COSHH assessment demonstrates that the company has considered all the factors relevant to the work and judgements have been made with regard to the type of hazard, monitoring exposure levels, and health surveillance of employees who may be at risk.
Why worry about COSHH
You might think that COSHH does not apply to you. There are a lot of substances that may be harmful that are covered by COSHH including paint, bleach or dust that you may use within your company or workplace.
Employees will feel much safer knowing that their employers are taking precautions to ensure their safety. The illnesses that can be caused from substances related to COSHH can range from mild eye irritation to chronic lung disease. Not complying with COSHH can also harm your business, from loss of productivity to prosecution.
