Reports this week (19th August 2019) suggest that a ‘no deal’ Brexit could see the free movement of people end immediately following the 31st October 2019 without any transition period.
The new home secretary Priti Patel is reportedly pressing for border restrictions to be imposed immediately on 31 October, representing a change from the previous position. This new stance continues to add to the uncertainty around freedom of movement and the employment of EU nationals. If you employ EU nationals, we would encourage you to discuss the situation with them and ensure they are aware of the EU Settlement Scheme.
All EU nationals wishing to remain in the UK following the 31st October 2019 are encouraged to apply for the scheme. The government’s current guidance can be found at www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families
