A recent survey taken by 500 people within the construction industry has highlighted that 32% of those working have never checked an asbestos register before starting work on a new site. Half of this number are completely unaware of asbestos regulations in the UK and even of an asbestos register at worksites.
This highlights a very low level of training, particularly with small businesses, sole traders and the older work force. 15% of those in the industry have never been informed of the risks to health that comes with asbestos exposure, and a further 18% stated they would be clueless about what to do if they found asbestos while working.
23% of all respondents believe that they have been exposed to asbestos fibres. With 5,000 people dying as a result of asbestos-related lung cancer in the UK each year, it is clear that these figures need to be reduced significantly to prevent more needless long-term health problems within the workforce.
The best way to reduce this number is with training and ensuring that everyone within the industry is aware of the risks of asbestos, which has been classed as a hazardous material within the UK since 1999.
59% of those in the industry have stated they are aware of the risks of asbestos exposure which has been reinforced through effective training. This leaves a shortfall in correct training and awareness of 41% in the industry.
