Asbestos is a hot topic – and rightly so! It causes around 5,000 deaths a year, and can be found in many buildings built before the year 2000 (houses, factories, offices, schools, hospitals etc.)
With around 20 tradesmen dying a week as a result of past exposure, it is vital that companies train their employees to be aware of asbestos and the dangers that come from exposure to airborne asbestos fibres.
When asbestos containing materials are disturbed or damage fibres are released. When inhaled these can then cause serious diseases that often take a long time to develop and do not affect a person immediately, but sadly once they are diagnosed it is often too late.
The following fatal and serious diseases can be caused by Asbestos:
|Mesothelioma||This cancer affects the lining of the lungs (pleura) and the lining around the lower digestive tract (peritoneum). It is almost entirely related to exposure to asbestos, and usually by the time it is diagnosed, it is fatal.|
|Asbestos -related lung cancer||Asbestos related lung cancer looks the same as Lung Cancer triggered by smoking and other causes. It is estimated that there is one lung cancer for every mesothelioma death.|
|Asbestosis||A serious scarring condition of the lung, that usually occurs from heavy exposure to asbestos over many years. This condition can cause progressive shortness of breath, and sever cases can lead to death.|
|Pleural thickening||This becomes a problem after heavy exposure to asbestos. The lining of the lug thickens and swells, should this get worse, the lung can be squeezed and cause shortness of breath and discomfort in the chest.|
