Over the course of July, our consultants spent more than 850 hours on construction sites across the UK providing advice on a wide variety of health and safety issues.
July 2021 Site Safety Report
Two of the most common issues were Risk and COSHH assessments, where we were able to guide our customers to our online assessment builder tools. These have been designed to enable busy managers to carry out suitable and sufficient assessments, that will not only satisfy their clients but far more importantly will convey the vital information needed by workers to prevent accidents and ill-health.
The three most common physical hazards we encountered were related to fire, work at height and harmful dusts.
Falls from height continue to be the single greatest cause of accident-related fatalities on construction sites, whether that be from a scaffold or into an open excavation. It is therefore essential that site managers and supervisors ensure adequate protection measures are put in place and remain there. It is a sad fact that some of these fatalities will occur where the protective measures have been tampered with or removed, and therefore inspections such as ours are vital to checking that risks are being controlled.
Fire continues to fill the news, and many of our own customers’ clients are looking to implement the principles set out in the Building Safety Bill. Recently, I met with the Health and Safety Director for one of the major developers and we discussed this very subject, including the installation of permanent rather than temporary protection measures during the construction process, and the importance of regular inspections.
Whilst workplace accidents will always be headline news, occupational health risks are far more common, and in the construction industry alone account for 3,500 cancer-related deaths every year. Added to this are the risks arising from manual handling, exposure to noise, vibration and stress. It is essential therefore that employers consider both HEALTH and SAFETY at work.
