The world of construction health and safety is pretty small, and if like me you’ve been lucky to have had twenty years in it, you get to know plenty of people.
This week I have been able to catch up with a lot of other health and safety managers. Whilst Covid is never far from the conversation, what we have all been worried about has been the increase in the number of accidents being reported on site.
Fortunately, amongst those people I spoke with, none had resulted in life changing injury, but in a few cases it was pure good luck that had prevented serious injury or death.
What was particularly concerning in most cases was that the causes of these accidents would almost certainly have been picked up by them during a safety inspection, but they had either been prevented from attending site or diverted elsewhere to address a Covid issue.
At the beginning of April, we identified that this was likely to be an issue for our customers, and that we would have to adapt our working practices in order to make sure that not only were their employees being adequately protected from Covid-19, but that the usual workplace hazards weren’t being overlooked.
This required our consultants to limit their time on site to an inspection of the physical workface and areas of upcoming activity, whilst reviewing documentation off-site in line with CLG guidance. Site teams have appreciated this change, as it allows them to focus their time and efforts away from the office, back onto site, where they can do more good.
Whilst Covid-19 remains a threat to us all, we will continue to adapt our service to meet the needs of our customers, to ensure that their employees remain safe and well.
Health and safety inspections are essential to maintaining good practices and to reducing the likelihood of accidents and incidents. As one colleague said yesterday “now is not the time to be cutting back, instead we should be redoubling our efforts or else we could be facing serious consequences.”
