Furlough Leave will affect people differently. For some, it will be a welcome employment break, but others can find the process more difficult.
It is likely that COVID-19 has affected all your employees in some way, whether that be physically or emotionally. As an employer, it is imperative that measures are put in place to protect the wellbeing of your workforce, particularly furloughed staff who are returning to work.
As lockdown restrictions are beginning to ease, employers are preparing for the return of their team members. Are you considering the wellbeing of your furloughed staff?
How Can I Support A Furloughed Employee?
1. Communicate Well
Extended leave from work can leave employees feeling isolated. Communication is key; keeping your staff updated regularly will help them to feel included. You may want to arrange frequent video meetings prior to them returning to work to ensure that they are up to date with company news and any new policies that are in place due to the pandemic.
2. Take a Sensitive Approach
Some staff may be feeling anxious about their return to work so it best to be mindful that you may need to make some adjustments to make the process easier. Ensure your staff are aware of wellbeing support available to them such as an Employee Assistance Programme.
3. Promote a Positive Working Atmosphere
You will make the return for furloughed staff easier if you help to cultivate a positive working atmosphere. It is important to be aware that there may be tension and a decline in morale in your workforce; remaining staff may feel resentful of those who were furloughed and furloughed staff resentful of those who were not. Working to unify your team will reduce potential conflicts.
As a furloughed employee recently returned to work myself, I was concerned about the transition period after extended leave. However, since returning, all my colleagues have ensured that I am settled in via regular video call meetings.
